Karst Works Inc. was incorporated in 1988 to provide specialized consulting services in karst and fractured rock terrains. Located in San Antonio, Texas, Karst Works Inc. associates have worked in more than thirty states and South America and have provided services for government, municipalities, corporations, and environmental consulting firms.
Karst Works Inc. associates have more than 30 years of experience working in water resource planning and environmental investigations at RCRC, TSCA, and state and federal CERCLA (Superfund) sites and in water resource management. We have performed hundreds of tracer tests to springs, monitoring wells, and large capacity municipal water system as well as highly contaminated groundwater settings. Our laboratory specialized in the analysis of fluorescent dyes and has the ability to separate multiple dyes using sequence scanning luminescence spectrometry.
Karst is a terrain where dissolution is the dominant geomorphic agent. It is characterized by the presence of sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, and springs. Karst also has a subsurface component.
Karst occurs in soluble rocks such as limestone, dolostone, and gypsum. Some sandstone and even granites may form well-developed fracture and karst aquifer.
Karst is also characterized by rapid groundwater velocities (often measured in hundreds to thousands of meters per day), little attenuation of pollutants, and groundwater flow paths which are difficult to define.
These characteristics present unique challenges for the management of karst resources.
